the story behind Vayadzor

I've had such a good response to my previous thread.

This one is also a question: When in Armenia, the guide told us an interesting story about a girl and her garden (if I remember rightly), which gave rise to the name Vay-a-dzor. The garden was destroyed, but she rebuilt it (again, I'm not sure if I remember it correctly). Does anyone know the full story and the meaning of Vayadzor? I know that Vay means alas, oh dear, poor me etc. Is Dzor earthquake?

dzor means ravine. It's also at the end of other locales, like tsakhkadzor, vanadzor.

The name is Vayots Dzor - a region in SE Armenia, and means Gorge of Woes. There must be a story behind it.

The legend related to Tsakhkadzor (or Dzaghgadzor ): A young woman had a cherished garden with beautiful flowers, which were swept into the ravine time and time again. She decided to have a church built, so that the people's prayers would bring back her beloved garden.
